Words by Coordinator Maria from By Your Side Events
Ghana and Ari have a specific energy when you meet them; loving and inspirational. Their story and their love are familiar and comforting, and I wanted to show it off. Along with myself, they love to travel, and I wanted to do something different from the light and airy look, somewhat a darker, moody vibe, but something that still showed off their love for each other.
The location was so unique, and I didn’t even know a vintage airplane museum existed until I thought of doing a shoot somehow involving an airplane. You can almost see in the air not only the love they have for each other but how much they respect and care for each other. I don’t care what you identify as or who you want to be with. Trust me, you want to have what they have.
Ariana & Ghana, how did you meet?
We met through mutual friends!
G: Ariana has a twin sister who likes to entertain, and I was invited to her house. She was honestly the first person I saw when I walked through the door. I am a little shy by nature, so I had no intention of doing anything about it, but Ari, on the other hand, was happy to come over and introduce herself. After she made the first move, I was obsessed and felt so comfortable with her, and we never left each other’s side the entire night.
That is so sweet! What about your favorite memory together?
We were lucky enough to be able to go on vacation with our families together in Miami. It was amazing to spend time with each other away from our typical day to day, but having our families with us was really special. Ari had just recently lost her dad, so it was a significant trip for everyone. In general, being together so openly will always be a beautiful memory for us.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome together?
Some of our family members who mean the world to us are still a little old school in their thinking. It is one thing for strangers not to accept that we are an interracial gay couple, but as most people in our situation feel, having someone so close to you who you grew up with think of you and see you differently because of the way you were born is pretty hurtful. We both have someone in our immediate families trying to get used to the idea of us being together; it hurts.
Tell us your favorite thing about one another.
Ari is, of course, beautiful, inside and out. Her soul sets me on fire. She is so determined and a little bit stubborn, but if I didn’t have her in my life, I wouldn’t have the courage to step outside of my bubble and live!
Ghana is my best friend, and she just gets me. She is so loving, delicate, yet strong, thoughtful, and kind. She really does make me a better person, and I am so in love with her for that.
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
We never thought we would have the opportunity to do something like this. Maria and Avery were so amazing to work with, and they brought out some feelings for each other that we almost didn’t know were there.
They brought us closer in a way that we never thought possible. Being in front of the camera makes us feel so vulnerable, and sharing that with the person you love is a fantastic experience. Conquer your fears, and they will make you stronger.
