Britt & Mel – A Modern Eclectic Wedding with Neon

This styled shoot was a true labor of love as it was the first-ever shoot to take place at The Grist Mill – a brand new wedding venue in Prince Edward County, Ontario. We are incredibly excited about this, as The Grist is queer-owned and works to promote the LGBTQIA+ community. Arranging a shoot to promote the venue’s core values was so important, especially within the local community. The Grist is a space that has been intentionally designed for non-traditional couples. The staff works hard to create a welcoming environment and ensure ALL of their events are inclusive, including; micro-weddings, drag events and shoots such as this one.

When planning this styled shoot, we carefully selected vendors whose values were all in line with these values. Since the venue itself used to be a functioning mill, the entire space is an eclectic mix of historic and modern design. To honor this, we tried to incorporate some of the historical elements into the setting and showcase its modern transformation through the use of (a ton!!) of neon. The intention was to showcase both seemingly opposite, paradoxical sides of the space. We hope this can inspire couples to think outside the box when designing and planning their micro weddings and to keep an open mind with everything in life.

Words by the couple Britt and Mel.

We had major crushes on one another for over a year, but the timing was never right. However, once Mel worked up the courage to message Britt, the rest was history. Since then, we have talked every day, and here we are three years later, patiently awaiting our elopement date!

When it comes to a favorite memory together we have a tie between our road trip to Florida and our off-grid cabin weekend to celebrate our engagement. A lot of people told us that the Florida road trip would be a challenging experience for us. They said, “having to spend that much time traveling together could make or break you.” It 1000 times over MADE US. We spent quality time together, grew as a couple, and made the most special memories.

The off-grid cabin was the same. Britt made this trip an absolute surprise for me. I packed a small bag of clothing, and she packed a cooler with lots of wine and tons of food. We pulled into this tiny cabin in the woods two hours later, placed next to a beautiful river. It was very safe to say I had no clue this was our destination, and we had a weekend for the books.

Hopefully, we are eloping in the fall of this year. We have plans to work on our house, making it the dream home we’ve worked hard for. We see a dog in our future, and we can only hope for health and happiness.
