Emmi & Jess – An Indoor Rustic Wedding

They wanted a garden wedding, but the weather meant they had to move their ceremony indoors – it was still perfect.

Tell us about the proposal.

The proposal was so romantic and private. It was a Monday, and I was at work and thinking I was heading home to the animals as Jess was supposed to be working an afternoon shift. I got home and parked in the garage as usual and walked in through the house to a pathway of candles leading me into our living around with the ceiling covered in balloons and candles, in words, marry me on the floor. I didn’t even give Jess a chance to speak before saying yes!

Tell us about your experience with your bridesmaids.

After we had already asked two people to be our bridesmaids, I decided it would be easier without having bridesmaids and had to un-ask them. That was probably the most challenging and stressful thing. But not having bridesmaids made it easier and less stressful in the lead-up to the day.

Talk to us about your experience finding your wedding dresses.

We went shopping a couple of weeks apart, both with our mums. It was October, and apparently, that’s cutting it a bit fine to get dresses ordered, so our options were a little limited. But we both had dresses picked within a couple of hours after looking in two or three shops. We kept them a surprise from each other until the day.

And, the wedding day. Give us the details!

The day was fantastic. It totally blew our minds and was so much more than we ever imagined a wedding to be.

Aside from the rain, which meant we had to get married in our indoor options. The Robertson Hotel staff were so accommodating, setting up the rooms and our arbor in the corner. Two entrances to the room meant that Jess, her mum and dad went in first from one door and then waited at the end of the aisle. My mum and I came in from the right door and met them, and then we all walked down the aisle together. My 92-year-old nan signed our marriage certificate and it was a beautiful moment.

We then went from Robertson Hotel to the Robertson Public House for our reception. Little did I know Jess had the ultimate surprise in store for me. She has organized for Mark Wilkinson, my favorite musician, to sing our first dance song. Instead of just the DJ playing it and it was mind-blowing. I can’t believe she kept it a secret and pulled it off- one of the best moments.

Jess, my mum, and her dad did speeches, all of which were so touching. We then had the most delicious cake that my cousin made for us as her gift and danced the night away.

What are your favorite moments?

My favorite moments were the exchanging of vows and the first dance announcement when Mark came out.

For nan to be there and to have her sign the register meant so much to us. She used to be quite homophobic, so for her to be there and support us meant so much.

Jess making her speech was also a beautiful moment and then to party the night away with all the people we love the most. It was the most magical day, and we honestly loved every moment of it.

What does marriage mean to you?

Marriage means loving your other half unconditionally and doing everything you can to ensure you make each other happy. Always remembering to smile and laugh and be there to support each other. Encouraging each other in their dreams and having faith and trusting and respecting one another with everything. Knowing you have someone who always has your back and will be there for you when you need them.
