Julia & Libby – A Queer Destination Wedding in Cancun

Lesbian destination wedding in Cancun, Mexico captured by Suzy Goodrick

After being uninspired by venues in their hometown, Julia and Libby decided on a destination wedding in Cancun, Mexico.

Tell us about the proposal.

Libby thought she was going on a jeep ride to have a picnic in the mountains for a friend’s birthday, but Julia planned a surprise engagement. When the picnic was set up, Libby was waiting to eat, but her friends were flying a drone, and Julia sat on the picnic blanket and proposed. Our friend put together the proposal footage from his drone and set it to the song “Ends of the Earth” by Lord Huron.

Libby then proposed to Julia at a Lord Huron concert, with the same friends, during the performance of “Ends of the Earth.”

What led you to planning a wedding in Cancun?

When we started looking at venues in Phoenix, we knew we would have guests travelling from all over and wanted our wedding to not only be a celebration of our love but a celebration of our friends and family being joined. In addition, we wanted to have more than just one night together, so we had the idea to do a destination wedding. We started looking at resorts in Cancun, and Finest was at the top of our list. Julia is from Mexico and had been to Cancun, but it was Libby’s first time.

Talk to us about the big day!

It was perfect because many of our guests arrived a few days before the ceremony, so our celebration didn’t feel rushed. The staff at Finest and our wedding planner Itze were truly the best! They took care of all the details for us. We were treated so well at the resort.

Lastly, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Having dealt with homophobia in the world and at times from within our own family, we have a deep hope that our government codifies the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. While we believe marriage is not the end, all be all for happiness or fulfillment in life, we firmly believe that everyone should have the right to make that choice for themselves.
