We have been together for five years and met playing on opposing teams in the City of Brotherly Love Softball League (CBLSL), Philadelphia’s LGBT-friendly softball league.

We had two proposals!

Kathleen proposed to Katie Jo after they finished a full Tough Mudder. Kathleen asked Katie Jo’s Mom to hold the ring until after the finish line of the race. Once we finished the race, Kathleen got down on one knee during a celebratory muddy photo.

Katie Jo proposed to Kathleen a few months later with an intimate display inside their home with candles, rose petals, pictures of their five years together, and cards they have given each other throughout their relationship.

Our engagement was about two years.

Why did you choose Terrain as the venue?

Terrain was the first venue we looked at. We fell in love with the garden and beautifully rusting setting. We love natural elements of the greenery, twinkle lights, and intimate setting. The outdoor temple ceremony space was magical, and we could instantly see ourselves getting married there.

Talk to us about your experience finding the perfect outfits.

Kathleen: I initially didn’t want to spend a large amount of money on a gown, and found a sample dress for sale at BHLDN for $200. As our wedding started to come together, I felt like her dress no longer matched the vibe and the occasion. I went back to BHLDN and found the gown of my dreams, completely obsessed with all the bridal feels!

Katie Jo: I knew she wanted to have a custom-tailored suit for the wedding. Worried about how a men’s suit would look on a woman, I tried out Indochino. I was thrilled and satisfied with my experience and ordered a custom three-piece suit with one of our favorite phrases, “Love is Love,” embroidered into it.

Talk to us about the big day!

Kathleen & Katie Jo: We both agree entirely that it was the single best day of our lives so far.

Kathleen got ready with her bridesmaids, sister, Mom, niece, and sister-in-law. Katie Jo got ready with her bridesmaids, Mom, sister, and niece.

We had our first look inside in front of Terrain’s living wall, full of various greenery. Kathleen tapped on Katie Jo’s shoulder.

Although it was cold, we enjoyed every minute of taking portraits and family photos around the Terrain property, truly Magic!!

Both of our parents walked us down the aisle, and our Father’s performed the ceremony together. It was short and sweet and beautiful. We wrote our own vows, light a rainbow unity candle.

Do you have a stand out vendor?

Kathleen & Katie-Jo: Kerry McIntyre Photography is incredibly talented and was a pleasure to work with. We were completely floored and beyond pleased with our photos. She was efficient and creative in the moment on the day. She captured everything we had planned out together and so many more that we will cherish forever.

Our musicians and DJs, Pat and Sean Kelly, were also outstanding. They are twin brothers who perform a massive list of acoustic music for ceremony and cocktail hour and then DJ and MC the reception. They were so fun to work with and are so talented.

What does marriage mean to you?

Kathleen & Katie-Jo: We felt completely united and committed before our wedding and often discussed the need to have a wedding ceremony and a big ordeal. The more we thought about it, the more we grew more and more excited every day to think of the concept of being “Married.” The best feeling after our wedding was the use of the phrase “My Wife.” We will never forget that feeling and the goosebumps we get saying that!
