Kayla & Kloe – A Proposal Photoshoot at Golden Hour

During a photoshoot to expand the photographer’s portfolio, Kayla proposed to Kloe at golden hour, and on her birthday.

Tell us about proposal planning.

Kayla: The proposal planning began in early March of 2021 when a local photographer reached out to us on Instagram, asking us to do a couples shoot for her portfolio. We agreed and set a date!

As the next few days went by, I reached out to the photographer separately to discuss my thoughts about proposing during the photoshoot. She instantly loved the idea!

As the weeks went on, we talked about locations, outfits, and of course, secretly, the proposal. I spoke with my family and her family about being there on that day, but I didn’t want it to be suspicious or obvious I was about to pop the question. We had to change the date of the photoshoot/proposal twice but agreed on May 23, a date everyone in the immediate family could make. This date just so happens to be Kloe’s birthday. I was not planning on it being on her birthday, but it worked out because it gave an excuse to have our families there- without any suspicions.

The day came and we headed to the location. I knew I wanted to propose on the dock of my family’s 120-year-old fully renovated island house on Gwynn Island, VA. It’s a small island off the coast of Mathews County, VA. My ancestors were all raised on that island, so it was special to me that we do it there.

We started the shoot and walked around the property, taking photos in several locations. The whole time, I’m so nervous and anxious for what’s to come.

The sun was setting, and the golden hour was at its finest. Finally, we made it to the dock, where it was all going down. After a few photos were taken, I grabbed her hand and said a few words before getting on one knee to ask one of the most important and special questions I’d ever ask. She said “yes!” and we both cried. It was truly the most fantastic experience! Having our supportive families there made it so much more special. The photographer did an excellent job at making this evening one to remember. We are beyond excited to get married in June of 2022.

The ring experience was so fun! I brought my mom and sister along for the support and input and it wasn’t long before I found the perfect ring. It was the best feeling having my mom and sister part of the experience, and I couldn’t ask for a more supportive life and loving family.

The wedding planning quickly took off soon after the engagement. We have a beautiful venue booked for June 25, 2022, in Williamsburg, VA. The venue is still in the process of being built, and it will be done soon. We have our colors/theme picked out and have been getting our bridal parties together. Sage green, blacks, and whites will be our colors. We plan on having lots of greenery as we are plant lovers! The DJ and pastor have been booked! We are currently deciding on the food and will be choosing our save the dates any day now!
