Who is Hope Oliver?

I am woman, hear me roar. I love love (all the kinds). I marry people for a job which is a pretty special job to have. I create custom, bespoke ceremonies for couples who want something different for their wedding day. I’m not your average wedding celebrant. Weddings can include some problematic traditions and I specialise in making sure my ceremonies fit my modern couples perfectly.

How did officiating weddings become your job?

It was something I had wanted to do for a long time before I actually did. When my best friend Clare (see below) got engaged she asked if I would go through the training and then once I did her wedding I was hooked! The happiness and the love is addictive. I have a background in event management and I’ve found those skills to be very beneficial as a celebrant also.

What’s your favourite thing about weddings?

I love the moment right before the ceremony starts. There is a very special energy in the air – reverence, excitement and barely contained joy.

Do you have any advice for couples who are worried about not being able to contain their emotions on their wedding day?

I always say to my couple’s that it’s not a race. Everyone is there to see you be married and there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a moment to collect yourself. I am a big believer in eye contact and deep breaths and I’ve been told I am very calming in the moment. But really, it is an emotional time for most couples so I say embrace it. It’s a beautiful thing!

Do you have a favourite wedding that will always stay with you, and why is it your favourite?

My very first wedding was my very best friend’s Clare. We’ve been friends since we were three and it was so incredibly special to marry her and her love. I got a bit teary seeing her walk down the aisle towards us but she came and gave me a hug before we got started which was the perfect way to kick off my first wedding.

In February I am doing double duty as a celebrant/bridesmaid for my sister so that will probably make the list too. I am not entirely sure how I am going to juggle both but I am thinking about putting a microphone in my bouquet as a start!
