Bert Jewellery is the bespoke atelier dreamed up by Welsh-born, Sydney-based jeweller Sian Jones.
Growing up surrounded by mountains and near the ocean, water and nature has been a constant inspiration source. With every aspect of her business, she considers sustainability and the effects that what she creates has on the environment. She especially loves creating unique sentimental pieces and says, “I feel that my small-town upbringing has influenced the way that I’ve built Bert Jewellery. I’m interested in everyone and love meeting people from every walk of life. It’s probably why I love creating personalised pieces”.
Sian studied Jewellery Design and Goldsmithing at Birmingham School of Jewellery, UK. She learnt traditional jewellery-making techniques, fell in love with the creative process, and has spent over a decade perfecting these skills.
After returning from a six-month solo stint in South America, Bert was initially started in Sian’s tiny Bondi home/studio. She now has a (slightly less-tiny) studio in North Bondi, which she works from and takes meetings on an appointment-only basis. However, she works with customers worldwide and online to create special one-of-a-kind rings.
All pieces draw influence from Bert’s diverse upbringing, extensive travels, encounters, coastal surroundings, and respect for nature. All diamonds and gemstones sourced are conflict-free and ethically derived. The ring boxes are custom made too – small-scale and manufactured from highly sustainable Australian timber. She tries to live as ethically as possible in her personal life, buying little, investing in items she knows will be cherished for a lifetime, and choosing a cruelty-free, plant-based lifestyle.

what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Find something you love and do that. It was nerve wracking setting up my business but I love what I do so much that I figured my passion would ensure the business would work. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
what’s the most unexpected source of inspiration you’ve had?
My sister, Rachel. We called each other Bert. When people ask me how I came up with my company name, she is the reason. She’s no longer earthside, yet she inspires me in every facet of my life and business.
what’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I decided to go backpacking around Australia after I finished my jewellery degree in the UK. It’s a long trip, so on the way, I spent three months travelling solo through India, before turning up in Sydney. Thankfully I got hired by a jewellery company quickly, who gave me fantastic opportunities as well as a visa. It’s been 16 years now and I’m glad that the adventure paid off.
