Lesbian Proposal Ideas From 30+ Real Queer Couples

The best lesbian proposal ideas are built from your own life: the rocks where you first said hello, the photo booth you always stop at, the pets who run the house. Every idea below is grouped by type (at home, outdoors, travel, with friends, double proposals, low-key) and every one of them is something a real Dancing With Her couple actually did. Be inspired by the bones, swap in your details, and once you get your yes, our guide to planning a queer wedding picks up from there.

At-home proposal ideas that still feel huge

Home is where your inside jokes and your animals already live, and plenty of couples would rather be asked in sweatpants than in front of a crowd.

  • Read a love letter on the bed. Harley told Ari to get out of her work scrubs and put something comfy on, then sat with her on the bed and read her a love letter and a poem sheโ€™d written before asking. If words freeze up on you, start with our guide to writing a romantic love letter or these 25 love letter prompts.
  • Send the pets in with notes. Sidney tied little notes around the necks of their three dogs and two cats and sent them to Maria one by one. When Maria came downstairs, candles and music set the scene.
  • Run a scavenger hunt that ends on your roof. Sarahโ€™s hunt for Danielle finished on the rooftop of their Brooklyn home with a violinist and dozens of roses, in pouring rain.
  • Fake a lockout. Stella staged a fake lockout on the roof of their first apartment. Waiting for Ariana up there: pink and orange florals inspired by the lesbian flag, champagne and a seafood dinner.
  • Make it homemade. A week after Shane proposed, Kathryn asked back at home with a homemade scavenger hunt.

Low-key and no fuss proposal ideas

  • Just whisper it. Fresh off a 6am flight, Madeleine whispered โ€œDoyouwanttomarryme?โ€ to Elysse in the architecture section of The Strand in New York. Elysse had a ring too, and her own Central Park plan. So Central Park got scrapped and the bookstore won. They later married there.
  • Wait for the cozy moment. Shane wanted to propose in the Montana mountains, but Kathryn had one rule: not during a hike, because of โ€œsausage fingers.โ€ So Shane waited until they were cozy in the camper that night.
  • Go back to your first-date park. Avery proposed to Alexa in the park where they had their first date. Alexa knew it was coming, just not when.
  • Pack a beach picnic and grab gig tickets. Caro proposed to Teresa on the beach in Asbury Park over Philadelphia Pride weekend, with a picnic and a Fletcher and G Flip show at the Stone Pony. Teresa proposed back a few weeks later.

Outdoor proposal ideas: beaches, mountains, lookouts and paddocks

  • Turn a beach into a gallery. Olivia lined Rockaway Beach with six framed collages, one for every year together, plus flowers and champagne. Her cover: she was just going down to the beach to check the weather. Oliviaโ€™s sister held the speaker blasting the playlist, and photographer Elvira Kalviste caught the whole thing.
  • Go back to where you said hello. Kelly proposed to Emily on the oceanside rocks in Israel where they first met. โ€œThese are the rocks where we said hello for the first time, and now theyโ€™re where Iโ€™m going to ask you for forever,โ€ she told her.
  • Ask at an animal sanctuary. Sarah arranged a private tour of Edgarโ€™s Mission, the farmed animal sanctuary in regional Victoria where she and Ella had their first out-of-town date, and proposed when Ella turned to pat Harmony the sheep.
  • Propose somewhere that already feels like home. Laura proposed to MJ in the Catalonia mountains, the landscape they call โ€œhome for us,โ€ with an uneven silver band engraved to resemble the grain of a tree trunk.
  • Return to your favorite lookout. Madison proposed to Emmalee at Yavapai Vista in Sedona, where theyโ€™d shared โ€œan unforgettable eveningโ€ on their first trip there.
  • Ride in at sunset. Nadine proposed to Zara on their fifth anniversary during a sunset horseback ride on the beach along the San Diego and Tijuana border, a nod to Nadineโ€™s San Diego roots and Zaraโ€™s family in Mexico. Their horse guide was in on it and picked flowers on the trail for Nadine to use.
  • Book a gazebo and a singer. Breanna proposed to Nicole under the wooden gazebo at Wagner Cove in Central Park at sunset, while a country singer performed their song, Jimmie Allenโ€™s โ€œThis Is Us.โ€

Travel proposal ideas, from coastal road trips to secret flights

  • Hide it inside an anniversary trip. For their five-year anniversary, Chelsea surprised Kelsey with a vintage red Mustang convertible for a drive along the California coast, then proposed at Bixby Bridge. Kelseyโ€™s best friend, a florist, had built a secret floral installation.
  • Book the flight they donโ€™t know about. Christina told Karishma they were off on a โ€œsurprise deep-sea fishing weekend.โ€ Then the car turned toward Boston Loganโ€™s international terminals. Karishmaโ€™s dad had secretly helped sort the passport months earlier, and they got engaged under a floral arch at Horstmarer See in Germany.
  • Go full icon. Vic arrived in Paris with friends thinking they were starting a tour. Instead, Sarah proposed in front of the Eiffel Tower, with a local queer French photographer capturing it.
  • Speak their language, even badly. At Lake Minnewanka in Alberta, Madison knelt and gave a speech in Koralyโ€™s mother tongue, Haitian Crรฉole. โ€œSince Iโ€™m not fluent, it didnโ€™t make much sense, but when she saw the ring, Koraly said YES!โ€ Madison said.

Proposal ideas with friends, family and a surprise crowd

  • Throw a party thatโ€™s secretly a proposal. Cate was told it was just a start-of-summer garden party at friends Taylor and Kateโ€™s place in Denver. Then Laura asked Cate to test the custom photo booth, held up signs reading โ€œWill. You. Marry. Me.โ€ and dropped to one knee. Some friends even flew in.
  • Recreate your first friend-date. Landry took Jenna back to a bowling alley arcade, the site of their first friend-date, and proposed inside the photo booth. Then Jennaโ€™s entire family showed up to celebrate.
  • Stage a fake proposal first. Alana fake proposed to India with a fake ring on the Atlanta Beltline, then did it for real on a bridge as friends jumped out of hiding with noisemakers. What followed was a callejoneada, a festive street parade rooted in Indiaโ€™s hometown in Mexico, with papier-mรขchรฉ puppets Alana made and a drink donkey.
  • Recruit a decoy friend. Kacie turned off location sharing and caught a Greyhound back to Chicago while Anna thought she was still in Tennessee. A friend got Anna to their favorite wine bar, where staff delivered sparkling rosรฉ and a card with a QR code linking to a video of their everyday moments.

Double proposal ideas for when you both want to ask

Two people who both want to ask is one of the best quirks of queer engagements.

  • Set the rules together. Lauren and Mallory agreed either could go first and the other would have three months to propose back. Mallory asked at the beach after roller skating. Lauren answered the next weekend with a picnic overlooking the Palos Verdes lighthouse and a backyard engagement party. Honest note from them: the secret-keeping was โ€œultimately more hassle than it was worth.โ€
  • Do it on the same day. Samantha handed Jazlind a piece of paper that said โ€œWill you marry me?โ€ in front of a painting at The Met. Jazlind asked back under Central Parkโ€™s cherry blossoms that same day.
  • Take turns on different trips. Emily proposed to Liz at Tacoma Narrows Park as a harbor seal popped its head up. Later, on a road trip down the coast to visit family, Liz answered inside a hollowed-out redwood on the Avenue of the Giants. โ€œI couldnโ€™t let Emily have the last word!โ€
  • Write them ahead, then swap. Megan and Jordan each wrote their proposals that morning at Carmel Valley Ranch, then exchanged them in unison at Garrapata State Park in Big Sur, photographed by Summit and Sur.
  • Bring the kid. Taylor proposed first in Rhode Island, and Argerie proposed back with her son Escher at Audubon Park in New Orleans.
  • Let the plan collapse. Daniโ€™s sunrise proposal on Acadia Mountain fell apart in bad weather and darkness. At Echo Lake Beach her prepared words vanished and she asked, โ€œWould you like to be adventure buddies for life?โ€ Lina dropped to one knee with her own ring box.

How to plan a surprise proposal without getting caught

  1. Check they want it. A surprise proposal should only be a surprise about the when and the how. Talk about marriage first, and ask if theyโ€™re hoping to be the one who asks.
  2. Get the ring size quietly. Madison secretly found rings Koraly already owned to work out her size, Laura borrowed one of MJโ€™s, and Chelsea got Kelseyโ€™s size and style through a friendโ€™s fake jewelry appointment. Our 10 tips for buying an engagement ring and guide to choosing a ring that fits your values help with the rest, and the Dancing With Her jewelry directory lists inclusive makers.
  3. Choose a cover story. See the table below.
  4. Book a photographer who can hide. Find an affirming one in the Dancing With Her photographer directory.
  5. Make a plan B. Emily scrapped snowshoeing when Liz got sick. Christinaโ€™s roller coaster hotel plan fell through after Karishmaโ€™s ACL surgery. Road closures cut off Alanaโ€™s Tennessee waterfall spot, so the Beltline it was.
  6. Brief one or two trusted people. Karishmaโ€™s dad sorted the passport, Averyโ€™s sister helped Alexa plan her proposal, and Oliviaโ€™s sister ran the music.

Real couples who did it their way

Sarah and Ella, Edgarโ€™s Mission, Victoria. When Ella turned her back to pat Harmony, part of a friendly flock of disabled sheep, Sarah rummaged in her backpack for her speech and the ring box. Then photographer Nikki Russian โ€œpopped up out of the bushes at the back of the paddock.โ€ The twist: both had secretly asked the same jeweler to make the otherโ€™s ring. Sarah chose moissanite because theyโ€™re โ€œgay space rocks.โ€

Nicole and Anna, Nashville. Nicole proposed at The Lipstick Lounge, one of the remaining lesbian bars in the US, with a carnelian heart inscribed โ€œWhat are you doing for the next 50 years?โ€, the same words her late father used to propose to her mother. Anna proposed at a Harpeth River overlook on a hike, then walked Nicole into her dream restaurant. โ€œShe didnโ€™t cry during the proposal, but walking into the restaurant hand in hand? Thatโ€™s when it hit.โ€ Photos by The Rose Reflective.

Jess and Mik, Oregon Coast. Jess booked their photographer for a surprise proposal at Heceta Head Lighthouse. Months later, Mik booked the same photographer for her own surprise proposal on the exact same day, neither knowing. Mik went first, at a local bookstore in Florence, with a custom book jacket illustrated with characters who looked like them. Jess asked later that day at the top of the cliff in dramatic weather.

Stella and Ariana, New York City. Beyond the lesbian flag florals, Stella paid an Etsy witch for a good weather spell (rain was forecast, and the weather held) and had the rings custom-made with four baguettes for Arianaโ€™s April 4 birthday. The night ended at a taping of Watch What Happens Live. Photos by Sylvie Rosokoff.

01.
Who proposes in a lesbian relationship?

Whoever wants to, and often both of you. Plenty of DWH couples proposed to each other, and some agreed the plan up front. Lauren and Mallory set a rule: either could go first, and the other had three months to propose back.

02.
What is a double proposal?

Itโ€™s when both partners propose to each other. Some do it by surprise on the same day, like Jess and Mik. Others plan it together, like Megan and Jordan, who exchanged written proposals in unison.

03.
Do both partners get an engagement ring?

Often, yes, though thereโ€™s no rule. Vic and Sarah bought theirs together, while Sarah and Ella secretly commissioned each otherโ€™s from the same jeweler. Our cluster engagement ring guide is a good place to start browsing styles.

04.
How do I propose to someone who hates surprises?

Keep the surprise small. Kelly said Emily โ€œis a total planner and loves knowing every single detail of whatโ€™s going on, which made it tricky!โ€ So Kelly told her about a dinner reservation two weeks ahead as cover. A low-key ask at home works beautifully too.

05.
How do I find an LGBTQ-friendly proposal photographer?

Start with the Dancing With Her vendor directory of inclusive wedding vendors. Ask how theyโ€™ll hide, what cover story they suggest and whether they can shoot a double proposal.

06.
What should we do right after the proposal?

Celebrate first. Then, when youโ€™re ready to plan, sign up for our free wedding planning templates and read our wedding budget allocation guide.
