Married by Miller Officiating
Officiating that’s memorable for all the right reasons.
Married by Miller Officiating is a one woman celebrancy business owned by Joanna Miller. A Washington, DC area native who lived in Australia for four years, Joanna specializes in creating custom ceremonies for couples from different religious, cultural and racial backgrounds.
She loves the particular kind of joy that’s present in queer weddings and is always learning about new ways to recognize the forces that help make marryers who they are.
Joanna has a background in nonprofit leadership and passion for the performing arts, so in her non officiating hours, she consults with cultural institutions and homelessness prevention organizations. Joanna can legally marry couples in Virginia, Maryland, DC, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.

Joanna joyfully marries couples of all identities and backgrounds — including, and especially, those who identify as LGBTQ+. A lifelong theater kid whose closest friends have always been part of the queer community, she believes deeply that love, dignity, and celebration should belong to everyone. Joanna is guided by the words of Maya Angelou: “No one of us can be free until everybody is free.” For her, that belief naturally extends to the freedom to marry the person you love.

How do you keep up the energy during long wedding days?
Lots of Diet Coke!
Have you got any pets? Tell us about them.
My rescue dog Corrigan is the love of my life. He’s part German Shepherd, part Boxer, and 100% spoiled. He knows how to pose for photos and graces multiple pages on my website.
What’s the most meaningful way you’ve seen a couple honor a loved one at their wedding?
There are so many beautiful ways to do this, but my favorite is having multiple people place a flower in a vase on their way to their seat. The vase can be given a place of honor during the ceremony and reception, and the flowers can later be given as a gift or left in a cemetery as appropriate.
