A Secret Elopement Before an Intimate Wedding in Alaska
When Holly (she/her) and Jillian (she/her) planned their wedding at Forget Me Not Nursery in Alaska, they knew they wanted something unforgettable. After all, not many couples can say they spotted a moose while choosing their wedding venue! They even kept their secret elopement on the North Carolina coast under wraps for over a year, making their “official” celebration with family and friends that much more special. From stunning jewel-toned florals arranged by a dear friend to a first look along the breathtaking Turnagain Arm, their day was filled with love and surprises in the most picturesque setting.
How did you two meet and start your journey together?
We met in the spring of 2019, playing rugby. We both had crushes on each other, but shortly after, Jillian was deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. When she returned in early 2020, we picked up where we left off and have been inseparable ever since.
Can you share the story behind your engagement, or lack of it?
Funny story: we were never actually engaged! We pretended we were. We knew we wanted to be together forever, so we secretly eloped on the North Carolina coast with just a few close friends, vowing to love and commit to each other.
We played along with the “engaged” story for over a year before our official wedding.
What led you to choose Forget Me Not Nursery in Indian, Alaska, as your venue?
We stumbled upon Forget Me Not Nursery while searching for the “most romantic wedding venues in Anchorage.”
It was love at first sight.
The drive there, along Turnagain Arm, is breathtaking, with cliffs, waterfalls, sheep, and the possibility of seeing beluga whales or bald eagles.
Touring the venue, we even saw a moose, which felt like a good omen. It was perfect for our intimate celebration of around 50 people.
What was the vibe or inspiration behind your wedding theme?
We didn’t have a strict theme, but we embraced a jewel-toned color scheme that reflected our style. It felt vibrant, elegant, and so us.
Were there any DIY elements or unique contributions from friends and family?
Most of our guests traveled across the country, so we focused on spending quality time with them leading up to the wedding.
Our most beautiful DIY element was our flowers, arranged by a talented friend with florist experience. They were the best gift we received and left us in awe with their beauty.
How did the big day unfold?
With just 50 guests, we decided against having bridesmaids or bridesmen. Jillian got ready with her sister, a trained cosmetologist, while Holly got ready at the venue, surrounded by her mom and other important women in her life.
Our first look was along the Turnagain Arm, where we exchanged private vows.
The day felt surreal – filled with laughter, love, and moments like dancing with our dads, enjoying Alaskan wild salmon from Masters Catering, and cutting a gluten-free cake from Alaska Wedding Cakes.
Who were the standout vendors that made your wedding incredible?
Our photographer, Emelia K Photography, was a rockstar, keeping the energy up and capturing every special moment. DJ Gre kept the dance floor alive all night. And our wedding planner, AK Happenings, made everything run smoothly, even ironing tablecloths! We’re forever grateful for their magic.
Do you have any advice for other couples planning their wedding?
Go for it! Have the wedding you want, invite people who bring good vibes, and most importantly, have fun.
Keeping our guest list at 50 made it intimate and enjoyable.
