Retro Suits, Vibrant Florals – Bold 80’s Inspired Wedding Inspo
Shan and Evangeline’s Melbourne love story is as bold and vibrant as the city itself. When you pair 80s-inspired power suits with dynamic florals by Pomp & Splendour, retro vibes, and a tram-turned-photo studio, you know you’re in for something special. This shoot wasn’t just about capturing stunning visuals (though there’s no shortage of those). It was about reimagining what wedding styling can be – fun, edgy, and unapologetically unique.
With a team of talented creatives, including Suitably, Pomp & Splendour, and photographer Kyra Boyer Weddings, this technicolour dream came to life in ways that celebrate individuality, love, and the joy of breaking traditions.
What inspired this bold 80s power suit wedding shoot?
It all started with the suits!
Alexander from Suitably envisioned an iconic 80s power suit vibe, but with a modern, inclusive twist.
The idea was to reimagine the traditionally masculine suit into something that works for anyone, regardless of gender. From there, the concept blossomed into a bold technicolour journey – think 80s urban femme power! Wild colours, daring styling, and unique backdrops like a tram and a retro diner brought the vision to life.
How did retro suits and wearable florals shape the look?
The 80s aesthetic was at the heart of this shoot, featuring long jackets with strong shoulders and bold lapels paired with dynamic wearable florals.
Wattle – a flower that blooms just once a year in Australia – took center stage.
Shan carried a luxurious wattle boa and wore wattle earrings, while Evangeline donned a stunning floral sleeve. Portable floral installations styled the tram and diner, all thanks to the artistry of Pomp & Splendour.
The Distinctive Dame added flair with bold hair, makeup, and accessories, emphasizing that wedding styling can be playful and fun.
The photos, captured by Kyra Boyer Weddings, used flash and film techniques to give the shoot a glitzy yet gritty edge, perfectly balancing retro and urban vibes.
What makes Shan and Evangeline’s love story so unique?
Shan and Evangeline met on the dance floor, where their connection was immediate and electric. They describe their love as one of the soul, as though they’ve met in another lifetime.
Rooted in friendship, their relationship is an authentic expression of queer love, reminding us all that love can follow its own rules.
They navigate life’s challenges with playfulness and resilience, always striving for a dynamic that fosters sustainable, healthy love.
Why is this shoot a celebration of inclusivity and creativity?
This styled shoot redefines wedding norms by embracing inclusivity, bold styling, and individuality. From the retro diner backdrop at Evie’s Fitzroy to Shan and Evangeline’s vibrant suits and wearable florals, it’s a striking reminder that weddings can be as unique and colorful as the couples themselves.

What makes Melbourne an ideal setting for this retro shoot?
Melbourne, Victoria, set the perfect stage with its urban grit and vibrant charm. The tram and retro diner backdrops enhanced the edgy, 80s-inspired aesthetic. The wide-angle photography highlighted both the couple and the rich, dynamic settings, creating a cohesive story of bold love in an equally bold city.
How is wedding styling evolving to reflect modern love stories?
Couples are moving away from traditional norms, opting for bold, personal expressions of their love stories. The Distinctive Dame perfectly captured this shift: “We’re in an era where wedding day styling is being reimagined. You can play with colour, be bold, and have fun!”
This shoot showcases the endless possibilities when creativity meets love.
