A Wedding with 80s Dance Music, Tattoos and Disco

It’s not every day that you hear about a love story that begins with a long-time crush and unfolds into a Disney-level romance, but that’s precisely what Lena (she/her) and Sloane (she/her) have built together. Their wedding day at Harold Boas Gardens and Moana Hall was a true celebration of the vibrant, colorful life they share, complete with everything from a heartfelt serenade to Sloane to a drag queen performance by Donna Kebab at their high-energy after-party.

What made their day even more special was the fusion of their distinct styles – Lena’s love for tattoos and rock music blended seamlessly with Sloane’s affinity for all things floral and 80s dance.

How did your love story begin, and what led to marriage?

Our story started at work. I (Lena) always thought Sloane was way out of my league, but as luck would have it, we eventually worked closely together. A deep conversation about personal challenges turned into a love connection that kept growing stronger. Fast forward to a dreamy hot air balloon proposal, and we tied the knot in March 2024. Every day feels like living in a Disney romance movie!

What made you choose Harold Boas Gardens for your ceremony?

Sloane loves being out in nature, and Harold Boas Gardens had the lush greenery she dreamt of for our wedding. One of her friends had gotten married there, so we checked it out and knew it was perfect. Plus, being only a five-minute drive from our after-party venue, Moana Hall, made it an even better choice.

Did you face any challenges while planning your wedding?

Honestly, no major challenges! Hiring our wedding planner, Alice Heydon, was the best decision. Alice took care of every detail we wouldn’t have thought of, making the planning process a breeze. The only “challenge” for me personally was getting fit enough to pull off wearing just a jacket, but I think I nailed it – and now I’m back to eating carbs!

Tell us about your wedding theme and inspiration.

Our theme was a mix of both our personalities. Sloane loves colorful flowers and ’80s dance music, while I’m all about tattoos, rock music, and disco balls. Somehow, we made it work and created an unforgettable celebration. The reception was styled as a big party, with Donna Kebab from Perth Drag Queens bringing incredible energy as our MC.

How did you find your perfect wedding outfits?

For my suit, I discovered Shane Ave on Instagram, and it was everything I envisioned. Perth Tailoring Co. tailored it perfectly to my body. Sloane, on the other hand, had a dream experience with Aby at Bridal by Neeve, who made her feel completely at ease and confident in her stunning, custom-designed gown by Dovita Bridal.

What moments from the day stood out to you the most?

So many moments stand out, but the ceremony was unforgettable. The birds were singing, and kookaburras laughed along with us. One particularly special memory was the surprise serenade I performed for Sloane. And, of course, the dance party with our guests was a blast! The Flower Girl Perth created a stunning floral setup, and the night came alive thanks to the vibrant atmosphere at Moana Hall.

Did you have any standout vendors?

Absolutely! Our photographer and videographer from Ring & Veil captured our day authentically and made us feel at ease. Our MC, Donna Kebab, was a crowd favorite, and Kirsten Smith made Sloane feel so special with the perfect hairstyle. Ultimo Catering kept everyone well-fed, and the beautiful cake by Cakes by Jack was a sweet highlight.

What advice would you give to other couples planning their wedding?

Keep open communication, and use a planner if you can. Seeing everything in a detailed spreadsheet like Alice prepared for us made it easy to budget and plan. Also, don’t feel obligated to invite distant family or acquaintances. We kept our guest list to 50 close friends and family, which made our celebration intimate and meaningful.
