A Casual Wedding in an Alternative Wedding Venue

Alaina (she/her) was a regular at the shop where Kaitlyn (she/her) worked, and after a few missed chances, Kaitlyn made the first move over Twitter. They ended up tying the knot at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland, a space they stumbled upon by luck! Their day was full of real, personal moments, like sneaking away to be fed by their caterer in a back alley – something only a relaxed, fun wedding could pull off.

How did your love story begin, and what brought you both to where you are today?

A: Our story started with me being a regular at the shop where Kaitlyn worked. Slowly but surely, a crush formed. Kaitlyn made the first move over Twitter, and the rest is history.

It was like fate, we kept realizing how many times we had almost crossed paths before. There were a lot of, “Wait, you know that person too?” moments!

How long were you engaged, and how did you feel about the timing?

K: We were engaged for just over a year, and honestly, it was perfect for us. It gave us enough time to plan without feeling rushed but not so much time that we felt like the wedding day was forever away. Though, planning while buying a house … we wouldn’t recommend doing those two things at the same time!

What was the wedding planning experience like at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland?

A: It was all about reminding ourselves that the wedding was for us and nobody else. We realized that making decisions based on what would make others comfortable wasn’t going to work for us. After that, everything got easier. We also relied on our creative friends and family to help pull things together – seriously, having a talented community saved us so much stress!

What made you choose the Avalon Theatre as your wedding venue?

K: Pure luck! The theater we used isn’t even technically a wedding venue. We stumbled upon it, fell in love with the space, and somehow made it work. It ended up being the perfect spot to host our friends and family for a night we’ll never forget.

How did you decide on your wedding photographer, and what was the experience like?

A: I originally wanted to elope, so I stumbled across The Breiters on Instagram. Their style just clicked for us – it felt authentic, like they were capturing people just being themselves.

We weren’t going to skimp on photos, and we’re so glad we didn’t.

The Breiters made us feel comfortable in front of the camera, even when we both had pre-ceremony meltdowns! They calmed us down and captured all the moments we wanted.

What was the inspiration behind your wedding theme and vibe?

K: We didn’t have a set theme, but we knew we wanted the day to feel true to us, relaxed and fun. We weren’t about to do anything too traditional just for the sake of it. It was all about celebrating with our loved ones in a way that felt natural to who we are as a couple.

What were some of your favorite moments from your wedding day at the Avalon Theatre?

A: We chose to get ready together up until slipping into our outfits, which really helped calm our nerves. After the ceremony, we jumped right into cocktail hour, which kicked off the party. One highlight for sure was when our caterer, Blue Heron Catering, fed us in the back alley while we took a breather. It sounds odd, but it was such a real moment for us!

Did you have any standout vendors who went above and beyond?

K: Yes! Besides The Breiters and Blue Heron Catering, we can’t forget Sherwood Florist. Ashley from Sherwood took our vague inspiration and completely blew us away. The arrangements, arch, and bouquet were more beautiful than we could have ever imagined.
