A Colorful Cosmic Mushroom Wedding

Hannah (she/her) and Alicia (she/her) met on OKCupid and shared an unforgettable first date in Newtown, complete with tea, dinner, and a kiss in the rain. Their wedding day at Exeter Hall in the Southern Highlands perfectly reflected their love of foraging, magic, and all things whimsical. With cosmic mushroom details inspired by Alicia’s proposal and a community-driven setup filled with laughter and tinsel, this celebration was truly a colorful adventure.

What led you to choose Exeter Hall in the Southern Highlands as your wedding venue?

Alicia: We love foraging for mushrooms in the Southern Highlands, so a cosmic mushroom theme just made sense. We heard about Exeter Hall from a family member who had attended a wedding there. The idea of having a community space as a blank canvas where we could create our vision was perfect.

And magically, real toadstools were growing around the hall on our wedding day.

Did you have any DIY elements, and how did you bring them to life?

Hannah: Oh, our wedding was full of DIY projects! We underestimated the work needed to set up the venue the day before, but our friends and chosen family intuitively knew we needed help. It turned into a team effort filled with laughter.

From making my bouquet the morning of the wedding to decorating the hall with cosmic tinsel and handmade signage, we truly put our hearts into it.

Tell us about your wedding outfits and how you made those choices.

Alicia: I wore a custom-embroidered shirt from Aje and tailored pants, while Hannah’s stunning dress came from Rixo. We wanted looks that represented our unique style – mine leaning more androgynous, and Hannah’s embracing elegant vintage vibes.

It was a collaborative and exciting process, especially when incorporating personal details.

What was the vibe of the wedding, and how did you create it?

Hannah: Our theme was whimsical, inspired by our love of foraging and magic. We decorated our cake, a “funfetti rainbow cake” by Flour Lane, with figurines representing our little family, including Basil, our pup. The day was filled with tinsel, fairy lights, and so much color! We had a seasonal feast cooked by Slow Beans and Bones and danced the night away with the rain adding a cosy, romantic ambiance.

How did you keep your wedding stress-free and joyful?

Alicia: We stayed connected throughout the day, soaking in the small moments. We made time for photos before the ceremony, which helped us laugh and relax. The rain might have dampened the ground but not our spirits.

Our guests enjoyed the warmth of Exeter Hall, delicious food from The Valerie Van, and heartfelt speeches. It was a true love bubble of joy, tinsel, and magic.

Any standout moments or favorite vendors from your wedding day?

Hannah: Definitely! Samantha Heather and her second shooter, Loz, were phenomenal. They captured every magical detail.

Our celebrant, Jo Booth, made our ceremony deeply personal, and our makeup and hair by Emma McGill stayed flawless despite the rain.

It was a day filled with incredible people who made everything come together perfectly.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their wedding?

Hannah: Spread out your costs over time if you can. We kept a shared spreadsheet to track payments, which reduced our stress. Also, don’t be afraid to DIY and involve your friends.

Our wedding day was made even more special because of the love and effort from everyone around us.
