An Intimate Elopement in Oslo City Hall

Helene (she/her) and Nora’s (she/her) met in a small Norwegian town, and chose Oslo City Hall to exchange their vows in front of a handful of loved ones. It was meaningful, had personal touches and a focus on their connection, not what’s trendy.

How did you know this relationship was something special?

We met on August 21st, 2016, at a small train station in Norway. Both of us were heading to the same gap-year school (folkehøgskole), and it didn’t take long to realize there was a connection.

By October, we were inseparable, but it took Helene a little longer to catch on to what was happening!

Within a few weeks, we both knew this wasn’t just any love – it was the kind that comes around once in a lifetime. We knew Helene wouldn’t be going back to the USA; we were going to build a life together, full of adventure and opportunity.

Why did you choose Oslo City Hall as your wedding venue?

Oslo City Hall is such a stunning and iconic place, and it’s only a 10-minute walk from our home! The convenience and beauty made it an easy choice for us. It feels special knowing we can walk by it for years to come and relive that day.

Plus, we wanted a short, meaningful ceremony, and Oslo City Hall gave us just that.

Tell us about your City Hall elopement.

Our day started off with a cozy breakfast together at home. We wanted to keep it low-key and special, so we even got ready together. One memorable detail was that it started raining as we left for City Hall, so we hopped into a taxi to avoid getting soaked. When we arrived, our guests were already waiting for us, and it was so emotional seeing everyone.

The ceremony was short, about 10 minutes, but it was packed with love. When it was time for Helene to say “I do,” she was so choked up that she could only manage a tiny squeak.

Thankfully, the officiant accepted it! Afterward, we took photos with family and friends before heading to the reception, which was at a family member’s home.

Tell us about the personal touches you made to your wedding rings.

Our wedding rings are engraved with “I love you & I like you,” which we feel perfectly captures our relationship.

How did you find the perfect wedding photographer?

Finding a photographer was one of the most important decisions for us. We knew we wanted someone who had a style we loved and who fit our budget. Since we only needed a photographer for a short time, it took a bit of searching, but it was worth it!

Anika was a dream to work with. She made us feel so comfortable and was amazing at organizing everyone for group photos.

The results? We’re obsessed with our photos and couldn’t be happier with the choice we made!

And, any advice for others planning their elopement?

Start early, and give yourself time. It’s much easier to make decisions when you’re not feeling rushed.

Be realistic about what you want and what you can afford, and don’t let social media pressure you into thinking you need an extravagant wedding. Remember that this day is about your love and commitment , not about hitting every trend.

Also, don’t be afraid to delegate when needed and take breaks to avoid burnout.
