Boston Picnic Inspired Lesbian Engagement Photoshoot

Sheila (she/her) had been planning her proposal for months, but things took an unexpected turn when Gabby (she/her) came down with a stomach bug just before the big day. Thankfully, Gabby recovered in time, and after some convincing to brave the chilly Boston weather, Sheila pulled off the perfect surprise!

Tell us about your proposal.

Sheila had been planning it all winter. She arranged for one of our best friends to visit for the weekend, and that we would visit Gabby’s family in NY a couple days after. The night before, our friend showed up for a surprise (to Gabby) visit. Sheila had been telling Gabby all week that there was a surprise coming, and Gabby figured that our visiting friend was just that. She didn’t know that there was still an even bigger surprise coming.

However, the excitement was nearly spoiled as Gabby came down with a stomach bug shortly after our friend’s arrival, so the plan for the proposal was almost ruined. Thankfully, Gabby was feeling much better the following day and after much convincing to go for a walk in the freezing Boston February weather, the big moment came!

Why did you choose your engagement rings together?

We thought it would be silly to try to guess what the other wanted, especially when our engagement rings are something we’ll want to hold onto for a lifetime. We also got our fingers sized together at a jeweler, which anyone can do for free usually and it only takes a moment. We eventually each found our favorites just by means of a LOT of browsing in our free time, and we couldn’t be happier!

Gabby’s has an emerald cut morganite stone, and Sheila’s has a pear cut green amethyst. We were both more interested in a colored stone than a traditional diamond.

Why did you choose to have engagement photos?

At first, we didn’t really consider it. But, as we got deeper into planning, we saw more examples that other engaged couples were sharing, and around the same time, Sheila’s mom suggested we get them done. Our photographer, also named Gabby, was really amazing and flexible for how we could go about it. We decided to go for it, and it was an awesome experience. We couldn’t be more happy with how our photos came out. We were a little anxious going in about how things would go in front of the camera, but by the time we were done, we were a lot more comfortable and counting down the days until we’d be able to see the final result!

We met Gabby through a Facebook group for planning weddings in Massachusetts. It turns out that not only do we have the same name, we also live in the same neighborhood and have a lot of interests in common! She really helped us feel comfortable and was very helpful in setting us up to look and feel our best on camera. We can’t thank her enough!
