A Vibrant Queer Indian Sangeet Celebration in Sonoma Wine Country

When Shannon (she/they) and Anjna (they/them) started planning their wedding weekend, they knew they wanted every moment to feel joyful, vibrant, and deeply personal. And their Sangeet at the Knight’s Valley Garden at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country was exactly that – a celebration of South Asian traditions, queer love, and community.

The Sangeet kicked off their weekend with bright marigold garlands, peacock statues, and cozy turquoise lounge areas where friends and family could relax, connect, and soak in the festivities. It was a playful and heartfelt prelude to their Retro Bollywood Dream Sequence wedding at Trentadue Winery, which blended their South Indian Tamil, Black American, and queer identities into something truly unique. But before we dive into their bold and maximalist wedding day (you can find that story here), let’s take a closer look at how Shannon and Anjna made their Sangeet a celebration to remember.

What was the Sangeet, and where did it take place?

Our Sangeet was a vibrant, traditional pre-wedding celebration held at the Knight’s Valley Garden at the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country. It was an opportunity for our loved ones to meet and mingle before the wedding day, and it set the perfect tone for the rest of the weekend.

What inspired the decor and setup for the Sangeet?

The decor was designed by Cultural Event Rentals, who helped us create a stunning garden atmosphere. Peacock statues, marigold garlands, golden lanterns, and brass bowls with floating roses gave the space a traditional yet whimsical feel. Turquoise tablecloths and gold-accented lounge areas made it colorful and inviting for all our guests.

What activities did you include during the Sangeet?

We wanted the Sangeet to be as joyful and interactive as possible. There was a mehndi (henna) station, where guests could have intricate designs applied, and lounge areas for relaxing and connecting. It was a beautiful way to bring people together while celebrating South Asian traditions.

What did the Sangeet mean to you as part of the wedding weekend?

The Sangeet was such a meaningful way to blend culture and community. It allowed us to honor Anjna’s South Indian Tamil heritage and share that experience with everyone we love. It also felt like the perfect kick-off to the wedding weekend – joyful, colorful, and full of love.

Do you have any advice for couples planning a Sangeet?

Keep it intentional but relaxed. Focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere that brings people together. Incorporating traditional elements, like we did with the marigold garlands and mehndi station, is a great way to honor your heritage while making the event fun and memorable.
