Rom-Com Vibes and Ocean Views for a Victoria BC Picnic Engagement
Nicole (she/her) and Laura’s (she/her) engagement shoot might have involved numb fingers and a blanket that wouldn’t stay put, but it also had baguette crumbs, windblown hair, and the kind of laughter you only share with your favorite person. Set on the ocean cliffs in Victoria, British Columbia, they rolled out a blanket and tried their best to keep everything from flying away. Photographer Aly Sibley was right there with them, laughing through the wind and capturing every bit of it. What started as a low-key way to warm up before the wedding turned into something way better. A cozy, chaotic, and completely honest moment that felt exactly like them.
What made you choose Dallas Road for your engagement shoot?
We were living in Victoria at the time and had a few favorite picnic spots by the water. Dallas Road was one of them. It’s got these dramatic cliffs and amazing ocean views, and it always felt like our spot. Even though it was freezing and windy the day of the shoot, it still felt special and very us.
Why did you decide to include engagement photos in your wedding planning?
Our photographer, Aly Sibley, included an engagement session as part of her wedding package. It was such a thoughtful way to help us get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. She’s genuinely one of the best! Warm, funny, and able to find the beauty in every chaotic wind gust.

What was the vibe you were going for in the shoot?
We were channeling cozy rom-com energy. Thus: knit sweaters, wind in your face, and a blanket you can’t quite keep down. It was less about posing and more about moving, laughing, and trying not to freeze.
How did you choose your photographer?
Nicole had worked with Aly on a previous shoot and already knew how lovely she was to work with. Once we got engaged, we reached out to her right away. Aly set up a call to get to know us better, and everything just clicked. Her calm energy, queer-inclusive approach, and talent for capturing candid moments sealed the deal.
What stands out to you most when you look back at the photos?
How real they feel. We weren’t trying to perform anything. The wind was wild, our hair was everywhere, but Aly captured the softness and joy in it all. It felt like us just doing something we love together.
Did the engagement shoot help shape how you approached the wedding?
Totally. It reminded us that we don’t have to follow a script. Our engagement and wedding planning were intentionally slow and fun. We’d go to coffee shops, have a little picnic, and talk through the next steps. It made everything feel more grounded.
Any advice for couples planning their engagement shoot?
Pick a place that already matters to you. Don’t worry about being perfect. Layers help if it’s cold. And if you’re working with someone like Aly, trust them. They’ll know how to bring your vibe to life.
