Your Queer Celebrant

Hey! My name’s Divina (she/her) – but you can call me Div.

I’m a queer woman of colour. I’m also a marriage celebrant in Melbourne – and I could be your marriage celebrant.

I started Your Queer Celebrant while planning my own wedding. I had to navigate the challenge of honouring my cultural (I’m Filipino) heritage while balancing my conservative family expectations and my (and my wife’s) own values and beliefs.

I wanted someone who truly understood this. But I couldn’t find anyone.
I didn’t think this was fair, so while planning my wedding, I became a marriage celebrant.

The queer community and Filipinos kept our cultures alive through storytelling. I bring this approach to weddings.
I’m here to tell your story and bring your guests.

My goal is to create ceremonies that honour the beauty and resilience of our queer community but also embrace the love. After all, our love has triumphed through it all.

I want you to feel empowered knowing you are supported by a village – on your wedding day and on every other day.
I’m Div. I’m a queer celebrant – and I could be your queer celebrant.

what’s your favorite part of the wedding day?

My favourite moment is the pause right after the wedding party has taken their places at the front. Everyone is standing, all heads are turned towards the back, and there’s a sense of anticipation. As a celebrant, I have the best view in the house. I can everyone whispering and smiling, and in that moment it hits everyone in the room that this day – that everyone has been excited for – has finally arrived.

what’s a piece of advice you find yourself giving to all your couples?

I often meet couples where at least one partner feels really nervous about the vows. My advice is always the same: Remember on your wedding day, you aren’t reciting vows in front of a crowd. You’re speaking directly to the love of your life. In that moment, the world fades away, and it’s just you two, making a beautiful commitment to be with each other for life.

how do you handle the dynamics of family traditions and expectations?

Unfortunately (but fortunately for my couples) I have first hand experience of the struggle of balancing family traditions and expectations – especially being queer. My approach is to remind everyone that with respect and a focus on what truly matters to the couple, we can honour family traditions and expectations in a way that also embraces the couple’s vision for their day.
