How do you calm down nervous lovers?
It really depends on the nature of the nerves, but I find humour is generally the best way to dispel those pre-wedding jitters. I am naturally hilarious, which always helps 😉 But, more seriously, I generally remind my couple that they are about to spend precious time in a Universe full-to-the-brim with peeps who adore them and wish them the very best. As someone wise once told me, the difference between anxiety and excitement is simply ‘breath’, so a few deep ones never go astray. I have also, on occasion, been known to hide a panicking Groom in our cool room for a few minutes prior to the ceremony, often cradling a glass of something top shelf – this works a treat!
How do you handle the dynamics of family traditions and expectations?
With pragmatism and compassion in equal measure. Every single family bring their own unique social and emotional dynamics, tricky or trademark, no clan is immune. While weddings generally bring out the best in people, family gatherings can be unpredictable and highly emotional. Grief from the recent loss of a loved one or an unresolved estrangement can simmer just beneath the surface, and once you add alcohol to the mix, anything’s possible. Weddings are also the ultimate cultural merger, a melting pot of two often vastly different sets of expectations and traditions, so it’s vital to hold a respectful space for both. One of the favourite parts of my job is watching two culturally diverse clans get it on together on the Rupert dance floor!
Where would we find you and what would you be doing after a wedding weekend?
Ideally, you’ll not be able to find me (!) as I’m generally enjoying a long ambling hike along the river in Warrandyte on my own or with my beloved. Having time alone to decompress after the intensity of back-to-back weddings is non-negotiable for me. If I skimp on this restorative ritual on my day off, I’m likely to become a gnarly witch, which is not particularly conducive to the business of bringing the love to my beautiful couples!
