Getting married in Massachusetts

In 2004, Massachusetts became the first US state to legalize same-sex marriage, and it remains one of the most meaningful places in the country for a queer wedding.

The legal bit

File your marriage intention in person together at any city or town clerk. Your license is ready after a 3-day waiting period and is valid for 60 days anywhere in Massachusetts. There’s no residency requirement.

Have a friend marry you

Anyone can apply for a one-day designation to officiate a wedding in Massachusetts. Apply through the Secretary of the Commonwealth well ahead of your date.

Where couples are saying yes
