A Vintage-Inspired ‘Garden Party’ Greenhouse Wedding
Owning their own floral studio, unique floral installations are at the center of this vintage inspired garden party wedding. For Jenny and Shanay, their San Antonio wedding day was one that truly reflected them as a couple. They even opted out of a dance floor and into a late night outdoor movie on the projector.
Tell us about your love story. How did you get here?
We were on vacation to Curaçao, early morning at our Airbnb, which literally sat on the water as the waves were crashing, and we could feel the sea spray on our faces. We were having coffee, and I surprised her. But that’s our relationship, laid back, comfortable, no big display but rather a moment just for us.
Shanay and I met and decided to meet for coffee on a Sunday afternoon. At the time, I was managing a floral shop in downtown San Antonio, and Shanay managed one of the largest primate sanctuaries in the US, about 2 hrs from San Antonio. We couldn’t have been more different, both in careers and lifestyle, but something clicked, and our coffee date turned into a full 4-hour conservation! I knew very early on that this woman was so uniquely special and I needed to hold on to her, however, Shanay (being seven years younger) wasn’t keen on settling down, so our relationship in the beginning looked a lot like Pepe’ Le Pue and the sweet little black cat always trying to escape his embrace!
Our relationship has been one of trying and adjusting, and growing, and then trying some more. We’ve endured the loss of family members, pets, and multiple moves; through those things, we have maintained a balance. That balance shows throughout the design and aesthetics of our big day, right down to our custom Nicole Mera wedding bands.
Tell us about designing a vintage garden party wedding.
Our relationship and our individual personalities and style inspired our wedding. It was a beautiful mix of vintage garden party meets the very European feel our San Antonio greenhouse wedding venue had, so it was perfect—that, but also modern.
Being a wedding florist with my sister meant we had access to the best in the field, and it also meant that all the little details that were important to Shanay and I, would really shine!
Tell us about the unique floral design of the ‘blooming’ ceremony aisle, and other wedding details.
Our blooming aisle was a highlight. We were able to stand single-stemmed florals amongst the greenhouse gravel. We also chose to have an eclectic mix of reception sofas and chairs with the ceremony chairs.
Instead of a dancefloor, we had an outdoor late-night movie with a sugar cloud cotton candy spinner.
Our outfits were also incredibly unique. I designed my suit and worked with an incredible bespoke suit maker, Limatus Bespoke, in San Antonio. I’ve always had a thing for kilts and my Scottish ancestry, so going custom was really the only option!
What advice do you have for couples planning a San Antonio wedding?
Be prepared for the possibility of a Plan B. We learned that the weather will be what it will be, and you have to surround yourself with the best professionals. Adaptability and going with the organic flow of the day will make things feel so much better.
We were planning for an outside ceremony, but I honestly think that moving it inside created a warmer, more intimate feel, and we loved it even more!!
Plus, the umbrella shots are to die for!
